Lesson 23 of 45

Should I focus on growing my community or growing token demand?

This is one of the most common misconceptions founders carry into tokenomics design; the belief that a larger community automatically translates to higher token price. It doesn't.

Community size and token demand are related but not interchangeable. A project can have 100,000 Discord members and minimal buy-side pressure if those members aren't economically engaged with the token. Conversely, a project with a smaller but economically active community, where participants stake, provide liquidity, and use the token for protocol access, can sustain much stronger price performance.

The relationship works like this:

AssumptionReality
❌ More community members -> Higher priceCommunity size is a vanity metric unless members are token holders with economic engagement.
✅ Stronger demand drivers -> Higher price -> Organic community growthDemand shifts the buy-side curve outward; supply management pulls the sell-side curve inward; price increases attract genuine participants.

Decentralization, broad token holder distribution, is a byproduct of strong demand, not the cause of it. When demand is strong, more participants want to hold the token, which naturally broadens the holder base.

What this means for prioritization: Focus your pre-TGE and early post-TGE effort on demand engineering rather than community vanity metrics. Measure demand quality through buy-side volume, staking participation rates, mechanism engagement, and institutional commitment size. Measure community health through governance participation, retention rates, and economic activity, not follower counts, server size, or social impressions.

This doesn't mean community doesn't matter. A strong community amplifies demand by creating narrative momentum, social proof, and network effects. But community without demand is noise; demand without community still moves price.
